Magic Returns to the Fringe!

A magic Saturday to highlight Halloween Month comes to the Indy Fringe Theatre. If you have any interest in magic, this is a day you don't want you or your family to miss.

The Williams Magic Caravan of Tucson, AZ, a magic shop on wheels, is coming to Indianapolis, Oct. 15, 2012. It's going to be parked at the Indy Fringe Theatre, 719 E. St. Clair, at the intersection of Massachusetts Ave., College Ave. and E. St. Clair. Over 1,000 items of magic including magic kits, props, books, and other items will be available for sale to magicians and the public. It will be open from 1 PM to 3 PM. Following at 4:30, a magic show that will benefit the local Society of American Magicians will be presented at the Indy Fringe Theatre.

Starring Taylor Martin as Colonial magician "Rodney The Younger" it offers families a fun hour of magic, mystery, and mirth. Billed as "History with something up it's sleeve!" Taylor's show was recently featured at The Feast of the Hunter's Moon in Lafayette, IN and Marion, Indiana's Mississinewa 1812. Considered one of the finest magic shows of it's kind, you'll love seeing the old tricks, the comedy, and the history. As Rodney says, "Have you seen the new tricks? They ain't that good."  The show will be introduced by S.A.M. #31 President Steve Spence. And following the show, the Caravan will have magic sets available for anyone that is interested in magic.

Tickets are just $10 for adults and $8 for anyone under 14 or over 65. The show is just one hour and will bring you magic you may never see again.

Talking with Ty Stover - 'Slammed'

During the build-up to the 2011 IndyFringe Festival, IndyFringeTalk interviewed some of the key performers to get insight into their stories, their audience and the Fringe itself. Here is what happened when we sat down with SLAMMED's Ty Stover.

If you could present your show to just one person, who would it be and why?
The person who is reading this right now… you deserve to see these amazing performances and hear the words of a singularly gifted young poet and playwright, Sharla Steiman.
List 3 words that truly sum up your show.
Love, Loss, and Lesbians

What is the best way for theater-goers to stay informed about your latest productions? There is a new facebook page. There will also be a rework of the old website down the pike. Folks are seeing us in the exciting transition period of rebranding and rebirth. Look for many more exciting things from TATU! If you “like us now” you will be able to check out a pic of Mayor Ballard and our playwright Sharla Steiman.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Arden-Theatre-Union/267732983254627

How does fringe theater benefit you as a theater artist/performer?
It provides a safer than normal environment for risk taking which is vital in the discovery of new and emerging talents. (One of TATU’s primary goals.)

What is the funniest line in your show?
“Woooo” (in context), and “are you some kind of cult?”

Where do you see yourself in a year’s time?
Back on the boards at iNDYfRINGE!

Why IndyFringe?
The fringe is a jewel in the artistic crown of Indy. Several other cities have Fringe Festivals. But none are run as well and as much of a pleasure to perform in as iNDYfRINGE. Just ask many of the out of town performers and they will tell you the same. I have seen it firsthand. We are extremely lucky to have the Fringe and to have the Fringe we have!

Talking with Diane Kondrat - 'Luminary'

During the build-up to the 2011 IndyFringe Festival, IndyFringeTalk interviewed some of the key performers to get insight into their stories, their audience and the Fringe itself. Here is what happened when we sat down with Luminary writer Diane Kondrat.

If you could present your show to just one person, who would it be and why?
Nell Weatherwax, a marvelous performer who began What If... programs with me in 1992.  This show has many similarities to the shows we did for 15 years in schools and detention centers.  She would laugh at both appropriate and inappropriate times.

List 3 words that truly sum up your show.
Youth, Danger, Hope

What is the best way for theater-goers to stay informed about your latest productions?
www.diane.kondrat.com, my teensy, low-tech website.

How does fringe theater benefit you as a theater artist/performer?
It's an opportunity to take risks.

What is the funniest line in your show?
I don't know, but I do like, "She is vastly cra-cra."

Where do you see yourself in a year’s time?
Acting in another show in Chicago; that would be fine!

Why IndyFringe?
Because I was asked so nicely by YAT, Pauline Moffat and Start Strong.

Talking with Christel Bartelse - 'ONEYmoon (A Honeymoon for One)'

During the build-up to the 2011 IndyFringe Festival, IndyFringeTalk interviewed some of the key performers to get insight into their stories, their audience and the Fringe itself. Here is what happened when we sat down with ONEYmoon (A Honeymoon for One)'s Christel Bartelse.

If you could present your show to just one person, who would it be and why?
That's easy -- Chen Wei-yih, a woman in Taiwan who has married herself at age 30 and then went on a solo honeymoon in Australia in October 2010, about 6 months after I had conceived my show on the other side of the world.  You can find out more about her here:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/22/taiwan-bridetobe-plans-we_n_772431.html#es_share_ended   As the bride, I feel like I'm in charge of the guest list, and so I'm also going to invite one of my twitter followers -- a hypnotist from the UK who specializes in quelling pre-wedding jitters.

List 3 words that truly sum up your show.
Hilarious, high-energy and heart-string-pulling. Yes, I know, all those hyphens are cheating -- but when you're married to yourself you can get away with cheating.

What is the best way for theater-goers to stay informed about your latest productions?
Theatre goers can find me on facebook, or check out my website www.christelbartelse.com .  In keeping with the wedding theme,  I always leave a guestbook out on the table after my show, where guests can leave me their email or write me a note.  Sometimes I even get a proposal!

How does fringe theater benefit you as a theater artist/performer?
What is most useful and liberating to me as an artist is the freedom.  I get to choose what show i would like to create and write, i choose where i would like to go on tour, and i get to tinker with my show to keep improving it.  I've added a tap number, had a song remixed, reordered scenes.  If I was performing with someone else I'm sure I would drive them crazy.

Funniest line?
Some of the best lines come from my audience during the short improv parts of my show.  I sometimes write these lines in afterward. One of my favorites is during the "bad date scene" in my show where my date said "I heard you tap dance, is that code word for lapdance?"

Where do you see yourself in a year’s time?
I would still love to do the Fringe for the next few years. I am looking forward to creating a new solo show, as well as potentially performing  a two hander. I would also like to take my two shows CHAOTICA and ONEYmoon (A Honeymoon for One) to some larger festivals.  I also teach physical theatre at a professional acting program at Humber College and sometime guest teach at Second City in Toronto, so its a challenge to manage all those projects at once.

Why IndyFringe?
I was invited to do DivaFest in Indianopolis in April 2011 with my show ONEYmoon. I had a great time, but only 3 shows.  When a spot came open for an International Artist at the Fringe and I was asked if I wanted to return, without a second's hesitation I said "I do".  The audiences here are so wonderful, the hospitality of the theatre community so warm.  Plus, ONEymoon had just been nominated for a 2010 Canadian Comedy Award, so I felt confident that the show could continue to attract an audience.  It wasn't just my mom who liked it.

Indianapolis Theatre Launches Campaign to Purchase and Renovate Building: Philanthropists Make $100,000 Donation

INDIANAPOLIS - IndyFringe Executive Director Pauline Moffat announced arts supporters and philanthropists Frank and Katrina Basile have made a $100,000 contribution to kick off a $600,000 campaign to purchase and continue restoring the building IndyFringe has called home since September 2008. IndyFringe has forged an agreement to purchase the 719 East St. Clair Street building that provides a backdrop for hundreds of artistic performances every year.

“Great Expectations: Funding the Fantastic Fringe Campaign” is being co-chaired by the Basiles.

“Katrina and I see this as an opportunity to ensure the ongoing availability of an affordable and accessible space to assist IndyFringe in accomplishing its mission of attracting diverse audiences while providing performing opportunities for artists, from emerging to established,” said Frank Basile. “We feel strongly that this is the perfect venue for that purpose and the time will never be better to purchase the building.”

In recognition of the contribution, the theatre will be named the Basile Fringe Theatre. The building, which will also include IndyFringe offices, sits near the southeast corner of Massachusetts and College avenues – adjacent to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail:  A Legacy of Marilyn and Gene Glick –and is adding vibrancy to this established arts district.

The $600,000 campaign goal, which includes the purchase of the building, renovation costs and initial operating expenses, is slated to conclude by December 31, 2011. The campaign includes a grassroots effort led by the IndyFringe Creative Council, which is comprised of young professionals and others involved with various aspects of performing arts.

“We are tremendously grateful to the Basile Family for their generosity and vision. Their contribution gets us well on our way to establishing a permanent home for IndyFringe,” Moffat said.

“Katrina and I love that the Fringe supports both emerging and established artists in dance, drama, comedy, cabaret, music, magic and multi-media. The artists write their own scripts and stage the productions themselves. The role of IndyFringe is to give them a venue to perform, and this building is key,” said Frank Basile.

Since IndyFringe moved into its current rental facility three years ago, the organization has invested in creating the best use of the space for diverse performing groups and audiences. Grants from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, and Massachusetts Avenue Community Development Grant, and architectural services from Perkins Ven Deylen Architects, funded early phases of the ongoing renovation and restoration.

IndyFringe Festival – the organization’s marquis event – returns 100 percent of ticket revenue back to performers, which is a unique business model. Since the Festival began seven years ago, it has given $508,000 back to artists.

“It’s extremely rare for performers at any venue to receive 100% of ticket revenues, and it’s nearly as rare for performers to have full artistic freedom. Those two things are what really make IndyFringe unique in Indianapolis and Fringe Festivals unique in the world,” Moffat said.

For additional information on the campaign, visit the IndyFringe.org  website.
