Roman Rimer's One Man Show About Gender, Sexuality and Spirituality Comes to the Indianapolis Fringe

Roman Rimer, NYC's openly transgender comedic storyteller, is taking his one man show: Evolution to the Indianapolis Fringe Festival.

The genesis for Evolution began in the Fall of 2009. Roman had recently transitioned genders and
wanted to help LGBTQ youth living in places where being gay or transgender is infinitely harder. Enter the Sanctuary Collective: a non-profit organization committed to LGBTQ community outreach. With the Sanctuary Collective, Rimer traveled to the Southern United States for a month and a half to do community organizing with Christian youth at colleges where it's not so easy to be out of the closet.

“It was my first time in the south, and being openly trans, I thought I was going to die.” says Rimer.
However, he emerged from the trip with a very different view of the south. “Often, differences just aren't there. We're all people, after all.”

Galvanized by his travels, Rimer returned to New York City and started working on Evolution, a new solo comedy show based on his experiences of a trans-man traveling the south. The show premiered in the spring of 2010 at the Magnet Theater. It was a success and was renewed for eight more performances.

Evolution's director Louie Pearlman adds, “It was really exciting. Usually solo shows don't receive such a long run at The Magnet. But the show must have spoken to people, because they kept coming.”

This summer, along with Indianapolis, Rimer and Pearlman are taking Evolution to the Kansas City and Chicago Fringe Festivals. They raised the funds for their tour through an online Kickstarter campaign and through a fundraiser featuring Joe Randazzo, Editor In Chief of The Onion.

"Most of the money is going towards sliding scale tickets," says Rimer, "we want anyone able to to see the show who couldn't otherwise."
